NAMASTE INDIA -- THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF INDIAN FOOD

So you thought that Indian cuisine was all about curry, curry and curry? with no other major health benefits?well, reading this article will definetely make you change your mind about Indian cuisine,so that the next time when you will be savouring the Indian food, you will be reminded of these :

Health benefits of Indian food:

It may help arthritis

Many Indian dishes are seasoned with curry, a mixture of healthful spices. One spice prominent in curry blends is tumeric which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. A study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism showed that this brilliant orange spice reduced joint swelling in arthritic rats.

Although large scale human studies are needed to confirm its effects in people, some patients have reported significant improvement in their arthritic symptoms after adding curry based foods to their diet. Tumeric is also being investigated as a possible treatment for brain aging and cancer.

It may help with weight control

Although not all Indian food is low in calories, the spices used to prepare these tasty dishes helps to promote a sense of satiety so fewer calories are consumed overall. The key to healthy dining at an Indian restaurant is to avoid dishes cooked in ghee, a type of clarified butter which is high calories and fat. When prepared correctly, Indian dishes can be low in both calories and fat. When dining out, simply ask the chef not to use ghee or added oils when preparing your dinner. You'll get the health benefits without all of the added fat and calories.

It's high in fiber

Indian recipes frequently use chickpeas and lentils, both of which are high in fiber and resistant starch. The fiber found in legumes helps to lower cholesterol levels and promote heart health. Most Americans don't get enough fiber in their diet and Indian food is a tasty way to boost fiber intake. Because of their fiber and resistant starch, legumes are one of the most filling and satisfying foods around.

Indian desserts are healthier overall

Indian desserts are usually made with whole grains and fruit which make them healthier than traditional American desserts. Some Indian desserts are lentil based which means they're higher in protein and iron than traditional American desserts. Many Indian desserts use yogurt instead of ice cream or heavy cream; but choose Indian desserts carefully as some can still be high in fat and sugar.

Although Indian food is a healthy dining option, avoid cream based dishes and foods that are deep fried or cooked in ghee. Even better, get an Indian cookbook and prepare your own at home. You'll get all the tasty health benefits of Indian food without the fat and calories.
